Chapter Five

Corbin

As I pulled on my dress after Brian left, I noticed his shield was still against the wall. I grabbed it and slid the Velcro straps over my arm as I picked up my phone and keys from the vanity. Maybe if I hurried, I could catch up to Brian before he left.

At the bottom of the stairs, I scanned the hallway and living room for Captain America and spotted him with his back to me across the room. Glad I’d caught him, I hustled over to hand him the shield.

“You left this upstairs,” I said as I reached out to tap him on the shoulder. “I’d hate for you to lose your bet with your sister.”

“What?” Captain America turned around and my hand slid to his bicep. Weird. His shirt was padded and definitely not damp. He also had a shield already strapped to his arm.

“Oh, you’re, um, not who I thought you were.” Upon closer inspection, I didn’t know how I could have mistaken this Captain America for my Cap. He was shorter, and his eyes were a murky green behind his mask.

“Yo, Bri. You want another drink?” a guy dressed like a sexy firefighter asked.

Bri? Bri as in short for Brian? Wait. Just wait a damn second. If this was Brian, who the hell had I just hooked up with in the bathroom? God, I was an idiot. Of course more than one gay man in the San Diego area would be dressed as Captain America at a Halloween party. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

“I’m good,” Captain America said to his buddy, then he turned to me. “Who are you supposed to be?”

I looked down at my blue-and-white gingham dress and red shoes. I thought it was pretty damn obvious even without any extra props.

“Uh, I’m Dorothy.” Captain America, Brian, looked confused, and I couldn’t help but think that if this was the Brian Archer had tried to hook me up with, he was one hundred percent living up to my first impression of him. “You know, from The Wizard of Oz.”

“Never seen it.”

In an effort to verify I wasn’t missing something, I changed the subject. “So you’re Brian?”

“Yup. And you are?”

“I’m Corbin. Archer Waverly’s friend.” I hesitated to bring it up but forged ahead, confident this guy wanted nothing to do with me. “We’ve been texting.”

“Oh, yeah. That’s right. I thought maybe you decided to ghost me like Archer did.” Brian gave me a slow once-over and ran his tongue over his teeth behind his lips.

I hadn’t, but I was starting to wish I’d made different life choices. Though if I had skipped the party, I would have missed out on the fabulous sex I’d just had with my mystery man. Gah! I should have confirmed his number. But wait. I was pretty sure I’d been calling him Brian all night. There was no way he had the same name and had picked the same costume. That would just be too much of a coincidence.

Sexy fireman returned and slid his arm around Brian’s shoulders.
